My wife and I stayed at the Golden Tulip in Dec 2007 for New Year's Eve and loved it. The hotel is a 15 min walk from the centre of Prague but this was reflected in the price and was well worth the walk (there are other hotels which are more central but you pay more for them). I think this hotel gets the balance right between distance and price. I was slightly concerned by previous comments regarding the area, however the walk into the centre was not a problem and we never felt threatened at all. In fact since returning I found out that my mother and her friend also stayed at the same hotel a few years earlier and they also loved it!
The hotel staff were very friendly throughout the stay (despite us keeping them up serving drinks until 6ish on New Year's Eve!) and the breakfast was excellent.
All in all a good hotel with a good atmosphere which I would recommend to anyone.
